Blow for Chelsea as world class defender set to leave after contract extensions broke down

Chelsea dealt contract blow as Antonio Rudiger happy to wait for options

Rudiger’s impressive stint
Under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Rudiger has been a man reborn playing on the left-side of a back three. Free to roam upfield with the ball, he has also demonstrated his no-nonsense attitude to defending, providing vital blocks and crunching challenges that can sometimes leave onlookers wincing.

However, Rudiger, along with fellow defenders Thiago Silva and Andreas Christensen, has just 12 months left to run on his current deal at Stamford Bridge. With this hanging over the club, it is easy to see why they pushed so hard for the signing of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde this summer, but the club ultimately failed to agree a fee with the Spanish club.

What next?
Speaking to Livescore, Dean Jones was quick to provide an update on the centre backs currently at the club, and while things were looking promising for Christensen when it came to contract renewals, the same cannot be said for Rudiger.

Indeed, Jones revealed:

With the best part of a season still to convince the German defender to stay in West London, Chelsea will be hoping that further silverware may make him think twice about leaving
