Leverkusen determined to keep Chelsea target Havertz, says Voller

Bayer Leverkusen are still hopeful of keeping Kai Havertz at the club this summer despite reports of an imminent bid from Chelsea.

The 20-year-old is reportedly wanted by several of Europe’s top clubs, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich all mentioned as potential suitors.

Havertz has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s standout figures with 15 goals in all competitions this season, including five goals in as many appearances since German football returned in May.

Chelsea are set to complete the signing of RB Leizpig’s Timo Werner this summer in a £53million deal and reportedly want Havertz to join his national team-mate, with suggestions that a £75m offer is in the pipeline.

Havertz sat out of Leverkusen’s 3-0 German Cup semi-final win over Saarbrucken on Tuesday night following a recent injury.

But when quizzed about the player’s future after the match, managing director Rudi Voller said Leverkusen are in a “good position” and reiterated his desire to keep Havertz at the club.

“We haven’t given up hope that he’ll stay with us,” Voller told German outlet ARD.

“We try to give him every possibility that he can call up his qualities. He did an outstanding job in the second half of the season.”

Last week, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told Marca that Havertz’s future was “not decided” amid reports of Bayern Munich attempting to sign him.

“We don’t know yet what will happen to Kai,” he said. “We know that all the great clubs from Germany and Europe are after him and that he has the ability to play anywhere.

“But we have to wait, there are many factors that influence. His future is not decided at all yet.”

Gerson on Chelsea shortlist

Reports suggest Chelsea are eyeing a move for Flamengo midfielder Gerson to follow the signing of Hakim Ziyech and imminent arrival of Timo Werner.

The 23-year-old spent three years in Europe playing for Roma before heading back to his native Brazil in 2019.

But the attacking midfielder’s performances for Copa Libertadores winners Flamengo have caught the attention of the Blues, according to Fox News, although they face competition from Dortmund for the £30m-rated star.

Spurs still want for Giroud

Tottenham are still planning to sign Olivier Giroud from Chelsea despite the striker penning a new deal.

The 33-year-old, who looked set to head to Inter Milan in January before the move broke down, agreed a new contract to stay with the Blues until 2021.

But The Express say Jose Mourinho is still keen on bringing the France international to north London, although with no threat of an expiring contract, it seems unlikely Chelsea would sell Giroud.
