Chelsea will attempt another raid on the Bundesliga with a move for Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz.

Expected to seal the £53m transfer of RB Leipzig centre forward Timo Werner when the transfer window opens, Chelsea also want a young wide player to replace the outgoing Brazilian Willian and Spaniard Pedro.

It is understood that 20-year-old Havertz is the player they want, even though they will face fierce competition from other top European clubs.

Havertz has scored five times in four games since the resumption of the Bundesliga and is on the radar of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea will have to spend heavily to win the race, with Havertz’s market value sitting north of £75m and the player under contract until 2022. They have already spent £38m on attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech of Ajax.

But the London club are determined to claw back ground on their rivals they feel they lost while under transfer embargo last summer.

Havertz has been in the Leverkusen first team since he was 17 and has seven caps for Germany. He has been influential this season but was left out of the squad that lost 4-2 at home to Bayern at the weekend.

Bayer’s sporting director Simon Rolfes said: ‘We don’t know yet what will happen to Kai.

Chelsea to rival Tottenham Hotspur for Gerson

Chelsea have reportedly joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Flamengo midfielder Gerson and are the leading candidates according to reports.

The 23-year-old has supposedly garnered the interest of Spurs ahead of the summer transfer window, but Jose Mourinho’s side are said to have had a £16m bid for the Brazilian rejected by Flamengo.

Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are both rumoured to be keeping tabs on Gerson, and according to Fox Sports, Chelsea are also in the hunt for the midfielder.

Gerson still has three years left to run on his Flamengo contract, however, and it is claimed that the Club World Cup finalists will demand a fee of £30m for the former Roma man.

Flamengo reportedly received a bid for Gerson from Tottenham last week, but the Blues have now jumped ahead of their London rivals in the battle for the 23-year-old.

The Stamford Bridge faithful already have the arrival of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax to look forward to, while Timo Werner’s proposed move to the blue side of London is reportedly nearing completion.

Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell also continues to be linked with a move to Frank Lampard’s side, but the Blues may face stiff competition from Manchester City for the England international
