He gave me peace of mind’: Kepa reveals ‘turning point’ conversation with Tuchel

“It is an important turning point,” Kepa Arrizabalaga told Marca about the Barnsley game in the FA Cup which marked his first start under Thomas Tuchel.

“Thomas from the first moment transmitted his confidence to me, he was sincere with me.

“He told me that he knew who I was, but that he did not know me inside, I also told him the same and we started working.

“Since then, he has always given me his confidence.

“In that game, I remember very well, before starting he told me not to try to do more things than I had to do because he knew in the situation I was in, I felt that all eyes were on me.

“He gave me that peace of mind, took me out of focus, took the pressure off me.

“From there in the Cup the performances were coming, the team kept winning and the only regret was that we couldn’t win the final.

“I do consider that that day was important, in addition to his words and his confidence.”

Kepa had been under fire for his mistakes and many fans were unhappy to see him start, even against minnows Barnsley.

But the goalie kept a clean sheet and went on to make three further appearances in the FA Cup, including the final which Chelsea lost to Leicester.

This story shows that Tuchel can find a way to calm down and motivate any player, even if he clearly struggled earlier.
