Marcos Alonso explains how Thomas Tuchel helped make Chelsea ‘team nobody wanted to play against’

“From the beginning, since Thomas came, he said we had to be a team that nobody wanted to play against, and I think at the moment we are on the right path,” Marcos Alonso says in Chelsea’s official matchday programme for the Aston Villa game.

“I don’t think it’s that much about the system, I think it’s more about how we approach the game. We work on that approach during the week, depending on the opponents and on ourselves.

“I think it’s great work from the team and also from the manager to be able to adapt. The depth in the squad helps with that and it’s an extra good thing for us to be able to play in different ways depending on the opponent.”

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel has been incredibly successful, leading the Blues to the Champions League win.

Marcos Alonso has also enjoyed a resurgence under the German coach, having been largely sidelined by Frank Lampard. The Spaniard has started each of the Blues’ games this season so far.
