It’s all eyes on Wembley this evening as the first FA Cup semi-final takes centre stage.
City look formidable as they continue their quadruple quest; the Premier League title is all but wrapped up, they are in next week’s Carabao Cup final against Tottenham and through to the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face PSG.
So the odds favour Pep Guardiola & Co., but, under Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea look up for the fight. Since the German’s appointment, they have lost just once in a run of form only bettered by tonight’s opponents.
Chelsea’s success has been based on solid defence and it will be interesting to see how they deal with City’s attack as Tuchel comes up against Guardiola for the first time in English football.
Machester city vs Chelsea First half highlights
34 mins: Well, this will annoy Thomas Tuchel even more. Reece James brings Fernandinho down from behind and Mike Dean decides the Chelsea man will be the first player into his book.
33 mins: Just a bit of hesitancy from Werner, who looks to have beaten Laporte for pace down the right but the centre-back recovers well to block a low cross.
James Robson is at Wembley
Those are the moments that really frustrate opposition coaches. Fernandinho gets away with so much and has had two goes at Mount without getting a booking.
That last one was absolutely reckless and it was only Mount’s quick feet that prevented him from being sent tumbling.
29 mins: It’s been a proper chess match so far here, but Chelsea have done an excellent job of stopping City playing. With the two holders in midfielder, City are just a little outnumbered when they do get the ball high up the pitch.
Really bright start for Ziyech. He’s swapping from wide right to the centre and finding space between City’s defenders. Best player on the pitch so far.
22 mins: It’s Chelsea well on top here. Jorginho does well in midfielder and they work it wide to Chilwell, whose cross takes a little deflection that almost takes it into the path of Ziyech.
Instead, it’s a corner, which comes to nothing.
Minute 48 – De Bruyne forced off with injury
It’s a sight that no City fan will want to see, as Kevin de Bruyne is forced off with what looks like an ankle injury. The Belgian beat N’Golo Kante to the ball and there was no challenge from the Frenchman, but De Bruyne immediate felt something.
Phil Foden is his replacement.
Minute 51- Ziyech puts Chelsea ahead!
Ziyech was denied at the start of the first half due to offside, but this time the former Ajax man’s strike counts and Chelsea are 1-0 up against City!
Manchester City vs Chelsea: second half
Minute 59- Ziyech close to a second!
The former Ajax man is played through on goal but Steffen is equal to his tame effort. Ziyech really should score there and it could prove costly.
Minute 77 – It’s Havertz time
That run from Werner was his last involvement of the game. The German is replaced by his compatriot Kai Havertz, who is likely to have a different role to the former RB Leipzig man, holding the ball up more than chasing lose balls into the channels.
Minute 83 – Sterling blazes over
The ball falls to Raheem Sterling 12 yards from goal but the Englishman, on his weaker left foot, blazes it over the bar. Time is running out for Pep and his team, the quadruple dream is coming to an end it seems.
Minute 87 – Thiago Silva taken off
Veteran defender Thiago Silva has run his race. Slightly limping, the Brazilian makes way for Kurt Zouma as Chelsea look to close this one out.
Minute 90+2 – Chelsea score, but it’s ruled out
Pulisic scores for the Blues, but the flag is raised immediately. The American was a yard offside when he was played in on goal and the right decision was made.
Chelsea are through to the FA Cup final for the fourth time in five seasons! Hakim Ziyech’s second half strike proves the difference and nobody can say they didn’t deserve it. For City and Guardiola, the quadruple dream is over, and they just didn’t look their normal selves throughout the tie.
