Report: Chelsea step up £70m Kai Havertz deal, aim for Rice and Lazio midfielder

Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their efforts to wrap up a deal for in-demand attacker Kai Havertz following the conclusion of Bayer Leverkusen’s campaign.

The Germany international scored a late consolation penalty in Leverkusen’s 4-2 loss to Bayern Munich in Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final at the Olympiastadion.

Havertz, who is valued at £70million, is expected to leave Leverkusen after they missed out on Champions League qualification. He is nowset for talks with the club over his future, after they lost 4-2 to Bayern in Saturday’s final.

Lampard has identified Havertz as one of his top targets and Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21-year-old has been given a boost after Bayern Munich pulled out of the race to sign him.

Havertz is said to have been identified by Frank Lampard as the missing piece to the puzzle, with Chelsea already bringing in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner ahead of next season.

According to the Evening Standard, the Blues do not want to waste any time in snapping up the 21-year-old now that his season is officially over.

Real Madrid have shown an interest in Havertz, but Lampard hopes to strengthen his attacking options further, following the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Chelsea are believed to be willing to pay £70m for Havertz, who ended 2019-20 with 25 goals and assists in all competitions.

Chelsea aim West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice

Meanwhile, the same report indicates that West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice could be next on Chelsea’s wishlist once they complete the signing of Havertz.

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Rice, after identifying the West Ham youngster as a possible centre-back option, as Lampard bids to shore up his defence.

Rice is a boyhood Chelsea fan and spent seven years in their academy before being released when he was 14.

He has predominantly played as a midfielder, but played as a centre-back coming through the ranks at West Ham.

The Hammers, like most clubs facing the harsh financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, may sell players to raise cash this summer, but they do not want to lose Rice.

During his five-year spell at Stadio Olimpico, the Serbia international has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe, resulting in speculation regarding a switch to Manchester United.

However, while the Red Devils are now well stocked for options in central midfield, it appears that the 25-year-old will still receive offers this summer.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea and Real are monitoring the situation ahead of possibly making a formal bid.

While Chelsea have funds available from the sale of Eden Hazard, Los Blancos would likely have to make a number of sales if they are to step up their interest in the player.

Milinkovic-Savic, who could cost in the region of £80m, has four years left on his contract.
